There is something about setting goals that leaves me feeling slightly uncomfortable. This is probably linked (in part) to the fact that if you asked me what I am sensing God has been saying about what we believe He has called us to here, I would most likely reply using 3 words … community, culture and capacity.
Don’t get me wrong … as a task-orientated person I love setting goals. But the problem I find with setting goals is that often they are simply performance related. I will try to blog about this further over the coming weeks but a performance based community or culture is certainly not what we are looking to God for here in Slough. That said, if we are going to see a church planted and established here, then seeing our capacity increase on all fronts is clearly something that is going to be critical over the coming months. And so, goals can be a helpful indicator when it comes to measuring progress … helpful because they should not only stretch our faith but also provide a useful reality check.
So we have set 3 main goals for the remainder of this calendar year. These are:
- See a ‘gospel community’ consisting of 12 to 15 adults (plus children and young people) begin to take shape on the ground here in Slough by the end of this year.
- See the lives of 1 or 2 people transformed as they begin or resume their relationship with Jesus.
- Find part-time employment (for Colin) preferably local to Slough by the end of September.
Although we have already taken steps in playing our part to work towards all three of these goals, the first is clearly our priority over the coming months as this initial ‘gospel community’ will form the basis of the launch team for the church plant. In time, part of our dream would be to see a number of similar gospel communities of 12 to 15+ people take shape across the town – some serving particular places, others serving particular people groups, and perhaps some even serving those with particular passions … all in one way or another playing their part in seeing Jesus transform Slough and beyond one life at a time.
Perhaps you are one of the people holding the missing jigsaw piece to seeing the first of these communities begin to take shape?
